ハリス先生の事：A little Writing about Mr. J. B. Harris
ヨッシーは戦後生まれなのに、夏になると、なぜか太平洋戦争を思い出します。
I don’t know why, but whenever summer comes, Yoshy always remember various things about Pacific War; though I was born after the war.
戦後の日本の「実用英語教育」の開拓者であり、第一人者、ハリス先生のことも、同時に思い出します。
And I remember the late Mr. J. B. Harris who was one of the leading authorities or pioneers on “Teaching Practical English” of postwar Japan.
1980年代に、東京目白での「LL講師研修会」で、数回、直にご指導頂けたこと、幸運でした。
In 1980s, I could have a big chance that I could take his lessons: “Seminar for LL Instructors” several times in Mejiro, Tokyo.
先生の授業は、厳しさと優しさが、共存していました。
His lessons included both strictness and kindness at the same time.
先生との写真は、この1枚だけです。
Yoshy has only one picture with him.
「中高時代から、『百万人の英語』で英語を学んできましたから、個人的にお話しするのが初めてのような気がしません。」と、話しかけてみたら、休憩室にも行かれずに話しこんで、この1枚になりました。
One day of his lesson, during a coffee break, I tried to approach him, saying, “May I talk with you? I feel like I’ve met you lots of times, because I learned English through ‘English for a Million People’ through those days in my J/S high school.” He was glad to do with me not leaving the room; we had a staff take our memorial picture!
いつか、「自叙伝」ともいえるご著書：「ぼくは日本兵だった」を丁寧にご紹介したいです。今でも、旺文社から出版されていると思います。
Someday, let me introduce his autobiography: “I Was a Soldier of the Emperor”. I bet this book has still been published by Obunsha.
感想となると、…この本の深さ、重さを前にしては、もう10年先になるかも知れません。
The content of this book is so deep and heavy that it might be after a decade year when I could write my impression about it.
